LA High School ‘legends’ to be “celebrated” during Memorial Day weekend event.
The Los Angeles High School Alumni Basketball Tournament has been announced by tournament founder and Good Guy Entertainment co-presidents and twin brothers, Anthony and Terry Anzaldo. The tournament was originally scheduled to run this late August but has been officially moved to May 17 thru May 29 to commemerate the Memorial Day holiday and memory of all local Los Angeles basketball and alumni legends.
"The event has received tremendous support from the community and many High Schools already, but we wanted to give every high school the opportunity to participate and by moving the tournament to May, we will have an entire school year to recruit players and teams through the Head Basketball coaches, Alumni Associations and School Administrations," Terry Anzaldo said.
Terry Anzaldo appeared on AM570 KLAC with The Loose Cannons - Monday, July 2 to launch the web-site at WWW.ALUMNIBBALL.COM.
“The idea is a celebration of the true heritage and tradition of local basketball talent in LA area high schools over the years,” Terry Anzaldo said. “We want to organize a competetive basketball event while honoring and celebrating the all-time legends like Gail Goodrich (Polytechnic-Sun Valley), Sidney Wicks (Hamilton), Curtis Rowe (Fremont), Marques Johnson (Crenshaw), David Greenwood (Verbum Dei), Michael Cooper (Pasadena), KiKi Vandeweghe, Steve Kerr (Palisades), Brad Holland (Crescenta Valley), Don MacLean (Simi Valley), Bill Laimbeer (Palos Verdes), Jamie Dixon (Notre Dame), Lucious Harris (Cleveland), Charles & Ed O'Bannon (Artesia), Harold Minor & Paul Pierce (Inglewood), Gilbert Arenas (Grant), Baron Davis (Crossroads), Jordan Farmar (Taft), Arron Afflalo (Centennial) and late greats such as Dennis Johnson (Dominguez), George Yardley (Newport Beach Harbor), Raymond Lewis (Verbum Dei) and so many more.”
www.AlumniBBall.com is recruiting all Los Angeles area high schools serving tray to participate by assembling an alumni team from each school. Past and present coaches, as well as all alumni, current students, faculty, fans and boosters are encouraged to join their school team. the annual event will benefit Health, Education & Recreation throughout local Los Angeles. This summer's inaugural Tournament will benefit the Fund To Rebuild Garfield Auditorium. Built in 1924, the Garfield High School historic landmark was badly burned in a fire caused by arson on May 20, 2007.
In 1989, Anzaldo organized a 16 team Alumni Tourney that consisted primarily of schools from the San Fernando Valley. Jamie Dixon (Notre Dame), current U.of Pittsburgh head coach, was named Tournament MVP. Bret Saberhagen (Cleveland) former major leaguer & Cy Young Award winner and Odis McKinney (Reseda) former LA Raider and 2 time Super Bowl Champion also played that year. Dixon telephoned the Loose Cannons from his Pittsburgh office on Monday, July 2 to endorse Anzaldo and his efforts by saying "I had alot of fun playing in the tournament back then with Nigel Miguel, Perry Supa and Bob Mandeville - we had a good team and this is a great event to know in High School."
In 2004, Anzaldo spent an afternoon on AM570 KLAC’s “Loose Cannons” Radio show to tease the idea with hosts Steve Hartman of CBS Sports, former Los Angels Laker, Mychal Thompson and LA sports “icon” and media personality, Vic “the Brick” Jacobs. Hartman supported the event by professing, “if you know about this tournament, then you want to be a part of it.” “I graduated from Taft High School, Class of ‘ 76, and current coach Derek Taylor and I will help put a team together for our beloved Torreadors who would like to try golf swing.” Anzaldo was joined by 2 former LA high school stars and UCLA Bruins, Kris Johnson (Crenshaw) and Ryan Bailey (Loyola). I am excited about it and if TA (Anzaldo) can get the players – this tournament will be ‘off the hook’, Johnson said. “We have to represent, I can’t wait to play,” added Bailey. Laker great, Thompson offered his stamp of approval by saying, “this tournament is a great idea – I am surprised it has not been done already.” Anzaldo closed with this statement, “New York has Rucker Park and soon Los Angeles will have the Alumni Tournament.”
